It's the "Peter Principal" at work (sorry Pete, nothin' personal).
A person will rise to the level of his incompetence.
That is to say, you will be, for the most part, promoted because of your skills and abilities. However, you will eventually reach a position which is beyond the scope of your expertise - your "level of incompetence".
