I agree that the small steamers are great. I also seem to have a soft spot for 6-drivered steamers, since my active roster consists of an 0-6-0, two 4-6-0s and a 4-6-2. My other (non active) units include a 2-6-2, and "non 6-drivered" but still small(er) 2-8-0 and an 0-4-0T. My only big steam is a 2-10-2. I need to add some 2-6-0s like Mr Nutbar and doctorwayne have in their rosters.
Although I mainly model CNR, I do like the CPR D-class ten-wheelers (4-6-0) that used to operate out of my hometown.
