VERY cool machine. I think the part you are asking about is a smoke deflector that some ATSF 4-8-4's had, but not the 3751, at least it hasn't since she was restored. That is the part with the elbowed hood right? If it is the scissors lift looking part, that would be a smoke lifter, not sure how it works, someone else here knows though I'm sure.
