Six: Enterprise, Columbia, Challenger, Atlantis, Endeavor, and Discovery. Enterprise was more of a "mockup" and test vehicle, and not actually "used", so there were only five active shuttles/ Space Transportation Systems (hence the term "STS").
Having lived through aviation and space, from the beginning of jet aircraft, the one thing I'd like to see before I leave this life, is the first steps Human kind take on another planet. The moon was a major historical step, but another planet would be the "next major step".
