I only have 2 brass locomotives, both PRR B6 0-6-0 and they were tarnished enough that I wasn't afraid to paint them. The one I was thinking about will get painted too, if I decide I want it that badly.  In your case if it looks that great and is a poor runner, then a static display in a hermetically sealed case would be smart, and a good safe investment.  Of course it could always be a special excursion locomotive for photo purposes.
