Narrow Gauge in the Black Hills
#7
From American Narrow Gauge Railroads- George W. Hilton, on the FE&MV: "The railroad was operated with 4-8-0 locomotives, an unusual choice for a narrow gauge. On the Lead line, it was customary to ascend and decend, with the pilot towards Lead to assure that the crown-sheet of the firebox would be covered with water."

There weren't a whole lot of 4-8-0 locomotives. The "mastodons" were mostly associated with the N&W, and the mention by nkp_174, was actually the first I'd heard in narrow gauge. I may have to find that article, just to see what they looked like.
We always learn far more from our own mistakes, than we will ever learn from another's advice.
The greatest place to live life, is on the sharp leading edge of a learning curve.
Lead me not into temptation.....I can find it myself!
