Oh Bruce, I am so sorry to read about the damage to your layout and locomotives. Do you have any home owner coverage that would help? I got hit by lightning last fall and lost a CCTV recorder, a television. It didn't come up to the deductable, then 3 months later I discovered it had taken out a 400 dollar flat bed scanner too. 
I have run trains so I know it didn't hurt anything there, but I never gave it a thought. Electrical switches don't stop a lighting arc very well.
I appreciate all of your efforts to keep entertaining us.
