Until Atlas brought out their line of RS units with the Kato drive, Athearn locomotives were probably the best bang for the buck. I had a few that I put a lot of work into and ended up having to replace the motors with NWSL can motors to get really good performance out of them.
When I saw the RS units and being a fan of Alcos, I thought I would give one a try. I was so impressed with then, I ended up with a dozen of them, RS-1's, RS-3's, RSD-4/5's and RS-11's and custom painted them all for my freelance railroad. They are still running like new today. Here are some of them.
