Canadian National GMD-1 in brass
#1
I've been given a Brass GMD-1 to paint in Canadian National

Dissassembly is pretty easy, just 4 screws. The handrails and everything else is soldered together so the model has ro be painted as is.

I gave the body a quick scuff with some fine scotch bright and wiped it down with some isopropyl alcohol. I masked the drive parts before spraying with primer

I used some Tamiya metal primer and am now waiting for it to cure before painting the color.

Now, that's gonna be a beauty! Can't wait to see her in paint and decals.

Thank you. I did a bit of research on painting a brass model and most of the recomendations involved using the Tamiya primer. Unfortunetly that product has recently been banned in Canada due to the volitile compounds. I  used pretty much all the one can on the engine and I have one can left, resevered  for a brass gp-9 project in the future. Unless I can get across the border to the US and bring some back.
After a few days the primer has cured and I airbrushed the yellow on the hood ends:

I didn't have Canadian National Yellow in my inventory so I used Vallejo Yellow Ochre which matches the decal colors pretty close. Since Vallejo is a water-based acrylic it will dry enough for me to mask it and paint the green tomorrow.

I masked the yellow ends and painted the green

Masking with the handrails on is a bit more challenging but doable. I used Tru-color CNR green on the engine. It's an acetone-based paint so it dries very quickly but I need to thin it almost 50-50 with their thinner so it can be sprayed out of my airbrush. I was able to handle the engine and remove the masking tape within 15 minutes after painting but it will probably take more time before it is cured enough to mask over and paint the black.
