OOOOO Those are sweet!! Thanks for sharing Jim
The Yellow Lowboy looks an awful lot like the GHQ 50-Ton Lowboy Trailer: http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/284-62001 The neck of the GHQ one is a little different, but its pretty close

After being loaded, the gooses neck is then hooked back to the trailer. I think that type trailer requires the tractor pulling it to have air suspension. The driver would "dump" the air out of the suspension, and the tractor would lower enough to put the bed on the ground. Then the drive would unhook the goose neck, fill the air bags, and pull away from the rest of the trailer. After the trailer was loaded/unloaded, the driver would back up to the trailer, dump the bags, hook up the goose neck to the trailer, and then refill the bags and be ready to haul the trailer away.

The "goose neck" is solid, so the only way to load it would be with ramps on the rear, except that most heavy equipment would not be able to negotiate the big bump from the area over the tires into the well. I think you could kit bash it into a reasonable model by adding the hinge and gusset detail at the top and bottom of the goose neck that is shown on the pics of the yellow trailer posted by Jim Currie. You would also need to reshape the nose of the goose neck to make ramp when it is lowered, and add the rollers that allow it to slide smoothly off and on the 5th wheel of the tractor. |
