peco turnouts

I'm in need of 6 or 7 switches just to finish my mainline on my layout... but I've run into a slight snag associated with that...

last time I bought turnouts Peco's were $21 Canadian each, unpowered Atlas ones were $15 Canadian... today that has gone up to $27 for Peco and $24 for Atlas. Thats pretty absurd considering the last time I bought turnouts was only 3 months ago!

Atlas switches...well I've found that most of my rolling stock and motive power like to pick the frogs and give me that SVDA light on my MRC handheld signaling a short circuit...

So Peco it is... but, there has to be a cheaper place to find these... any help?

Buy them in the UK, and get them shipped accross. Its alot cheaper as they are manufactured here in the UK - Its around £7-£9 per turnout (CAD $14-$18). Not sure what the shipping would be, but it shouldn't be too bad. Have a look at Hattons. That Price is less of course when you consider that you can deduct 17.5% VAT from it as you are outside the EU (More info about this from Hattons here).

I checked that ehattons place... just the turnouts alone = $250 CAD before shipping

Our good pal Fifer's works out to $180 CAD shipped, which is what I'm leaning towards right now...

but the local shop works out not to bad @ $190 + taxes

so either way I'm not doing as bad as I thought.

The most expensive of the standard points is $18. Multiply that by 7, and then divide by 1.175(to remove VAT), and you get $110 Canadian. And that is for Code 55. The Code 80 stuff is at most $15 per turnout, so would be $90 for 7 of them.

I've just checked Hattons shipping charges. For up to 2kg, Its $53 CAD to ship to Edmonton, AB, Canada. bringing the total to $140 to $160 CAD

Their current prices for PECO turnouts are: #4 - $12.85 #6 - $13.55 #8 (including curved) - $15.65. All prices are American $$$ and I am not sure how that converts to Canadian.
They also have great prices on structures.
When I have ordered from them, the order is usually shipped within 48 hours. They have a flat rate shippping cost of $8.50 although I am not sure what if any up charge there is to Canada.

unfortunately Brooklyn Locomotive Works does not accept foreign orders. Found that out when I tried to buy a Consolidation there this past winter.

As for the Peco's I went in to my LHS to pickup my Rapido Passenger Car (VIA Sleeper: Edmonton) that showed up, and I was telling the guy in the train department who I normally deal with my delima of buying local to support local buisiness, vs saving quite a few bucks dealing off shore... he matched the pricing for me. So I picked up all my currently needed turnouts for $150 canadian locally.

He told me he cant' do this for me very often, but he did it for me today because he knows I'm dedicated to his store and I've blown a lot of coin in there over the past year.

Now there's a hobby shop that will be open when all the others close. Your lucky to have him.

Now that is an hobby shop and an half. I wish my LHS was anything like that - unfortunately its a store chain and so prices are high, there is very little in stock, and they don't sell what I want. Hence I do all my model railway shopping at exhibitions or online.

Yea, these guys are pretty awesome. They are a private store, in fact I don't even know of a chain store in Edmonton for trains or hobbies in general. So prices are generally the best in the city (not to mention province when I goto some of the other cities)

But their freakin huge! The store is at least 2200 sq ft, and the train area is about 800 sq of that. (they also do rc planes, rc boats, rc cars, car model kits, rockets...etc) but the nscale selection can be pretty limited... I usually gotta order what I want. Their modern selection is pretty huge, but the transition stuff and steam stuff is usually pretty lacking.
