Duluth 1905
#1
Hi guys --

Just wanted to share these links, as they show a very modelgenic set of industries along the track - four panoramic shots from http://www.shorpy.com showing tracks along the waterfront in Duluth, MN, in 1905.

Have a look at the pictures: a coach yard for old time passenger coaches, yard tracks, a RIP track, interesting bakdrop/skyline - with buildings up along the hill and the incline railroad in the far background, interesting looking industries right behind the tracks - a cool freight house, buildings on an incline with train service for the basement, interesting signs, interesting looking background buildings, streets ending at the RR and a street crossing the RR on a bridge, a little of the waterfront in the foreground, some foreground industries.

It would make a pretty nifty inspiration for a layout, wouldn't it ?

Great details in those photos that are very useful to me and the era that I am modeling. Some things that I noticed:

1) Most cars have archbar trucks and truss rods.
2) About half of the passenger cars have closed vestibules
3) The predominant freight cars are box cars and refrigerators
4) the gondolas with coal in the 3rd and 4th photo, and the gondola with the severe buckle in the center a la John Allen. I guess there was a prototype for some of his modeling!!

Plenty of stuff useful here. I will go back to these photos to give me inspiration and ideas. Thanks for posting.
