LOS ANGELES JCT. RY HORN LEAD
#1
Posted this on another forum this AM. It's some aerial pix of the LAJ RY Horn Lead:

Have these in Picasa so hopefully you'll be able to see them here. But then I'm no "hacker".LOL Click on link to go to the Tinyurl site then click on "Proceed to this site." Once open click on Slide Show to see larger images.

Here's 4 from historicaerials.com:

The years are 1948, 1952, 1972 & 1980. North is on top.

And here's 12 from Bing:

There should be titles to these giving industry names, direction of view & other info.

Here's a link to the LAJ 2000 Track Chart for the lead.

When I binged Federal Cold Storage I came up with National Cold Storage which isn't rail served.

I couldn't get the other two links to work.

Finally got into Bing aerials w/ birds-eye view of the LAJ Horn Lead:
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://tinyurl.com/4u98ayu">http://tinyurl.com/4u98ayu</a><!-- m -->
Once opened click on "Proceed to this site". Zoom in to find west end of the Horn Lead east of Downey Rd and between District Bl & Fruitland Av. If you get "Road" on right aide above image, put your cursor over it to get Birds Eye.
Also check out the joint LAJ/ATSF team tracks at Fruitland & Seville. Very model-able! ATSF got to their side from Malabar yard which is inside & south of the Pacific Bl "elbow".
Access to the J is via UP's San Pedro Sub parallel to Downey Rd. This is just north of Charter St. Follow it north to get to ATSF''s Hobart Yard & then UP's East Yard . The PE?SP interchange track w/ the J is from tha rails running along Randolph St on the south side.
As can be seen modeling the J will be some track w/ mostly buildings, streets & parking lots for scenery. So the only veg will be a few weeds here & there. Yeehaw!

Andy,I followed the track around in several directions by following various routes off the switches..That a very interesting area and worthy of study.

Sadly I also notice a lot of industries are no longer rail served.I also found a crossing in the street that serves 2 industries.

Thanks for posting the link. Thumbsup

My modeling era is from '40s thru '80s so not too worried about current conditions. Have enough rolling stock to have Ops sessions in any 10 year increment. That includes LAJ's & the interchange RRs (ATSF, PE, SP & UP).

I think you chose a very interesting area to model. Thumbsup

Research into the J shows it to be a very interesting RR to model given the variety of industries & rolling stock to be modeled. So much so can't possibly model it all! Icon_lol
