SSWUP ISL - Build
It's amazing all the great help we have at our fingertips here on the Gauge...

I managed a few minutes on the layout today and got some fencing up, really ads a little life to the layout, really need to choose a good grass and tree selection next!!

Here are some new shots of SSW 7655 doing some switching passed Inland Container taken from Global Transload and Lumber:

Very very nice. I really like the buildings on the right in the last photo. They look like many of the structures that I see in the industrial areas of Houston. The fences also add alot to the scene. You're doing a superb job on all this Thumbsup

Now, tell more about the fences... how did you do them?

Very nice.

The details, particularly the fencing, is really bringing this layout to life.

Please keep sharing, very inspiring indeed.

Hi,
I'm just getting back to the list after being busy on other things. My layout too is also built using a lot of Lance Mindheim's ideas. In your thread you mentioned the process Lance uses on his streets. I missed that thread,so could you fill me in on how he goes about doing his streets? The whole idea of small, highly detailed layouts is a great idea. I had an aircraft carrier layout a long time ago and never got close to finishing it. Using this current idea of less is more is definitely the way to go. Hope to hear from you soon.

Hey, thanks for all the encouragement guys!!

Mark...have a look here... http://www.lancemindheim.com/roads.htm

His site and books are full of ideas and solutions and I highly recommend buying some of the books as reference if you are nto ISL's... Also look out for Reinhard (faraway) on this forum and Kurt (cnw1961)... they have loads of tips and trick to help an ISl builder.

I need to decide on realistic trees and grass guys....what do you recommend? Heki? Deco Grass? What?

Very nice job on the structures as well as the fencing. The trees next to the gate add a lot to the scene. It's amazing how small details tie everything together. I've used both Lance's and Kurt's method (200 grit sandpaper)for make roads several times. Probably the easiest is Lance's although both yield super results. The time consuming part is the striping of the lanes. I have thrown a couple of pictures of from my layout with roads using Lance's method.

The best looking grass is static grass. There is a wealth of information on the Model Railroad Hobbyist web site. There was an article in the March issue of the magazine on page 93 on how to make 3 different inexpensive versions of a static grass applicator. If you go to the MRH site and click on the "maazine" "button" at the top of the page, it will bring up a drop down menu. Look for the selection "MENU (Ron Goodwin) and open it and put "static grass" in the search engine, and you will get a bunch of references to the subject including the articles in the magazine as well as articles in the various paper mags from the past. It also listed the video from Joe Fugate that covers the subject should you want to get any of his videos.

I found this on Ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/GRASSHOPPER-sta ... 3f1020397a I bought one for myself, cause i didn't want to go through the hassle of having to build one myself. Not a bad price, considering the price of the Noch version.

I'm not posting this to be mean or high jack this really good thread but that Grasshopper is the fly swatter style made from one from Harbor Freight ($3) and about $2 more dollars in other parts. It only takes about 3 minutes to build one and there are a ton of Youtube videos that will walk you through the very simple build. I know Don will be very happy with his and look forward to seeing some pictures of the finished work. I know most folks don't have (or need to) spend $150 for the Noch when a Noch-off will do, but some folks may not want to spend the $55 for the Grasshopper

Is the fencing a Commercial kit?or did you make them yourself? They are very detailed, and must say the most realistic fencing i've seen.

Wow, this is really something. I like your ballast, looks so natural. And it's interesting how you managed to make industries look so huge in such a small space. You've got a great sens on proportion on that.

Continue your excellent work!

Thanks as always for the comments guys! I have not posted in months as it is full on summer here now and with the festive season being so busy with family most of the time is spent at the beach or outdoors. There may not be some news from me for some time still but maybe I will post some new pics soon!

The fencing is a Walthers Cornerstone kit that I modified and drilled through the uprights< just made it neater!!

Will come back and reply/post soon as I have some decent time!

Thanks again all!!

Really have enjoyed seeing the progress on your layout! Looking Very Nice.
Can you share your source for the chain link fencing? Was this scratch built or purchased?
I have scratch built using styrene rod and tulle with descent results but not to the level that I see in the photos.
Thanks and I look forward to seeing more........

Duh! I guess I should have read the post above. Feeling Pretty Silly.
