Wanted: Bachman DCC controller.
#1
I am looking for a used Bachmann E-Z Command DCC system for a starter model railroad project for my nephew. If anyone out there has a used (good condition) system they don't need anymore, please send me a PM letting me know how much you want for it. Why Bachman? My brother picked up some used Bachman DCC units at a garage sale. The seller never put the DCC controller with the locomotives. By time he found out that the DCC controller should have been included, it was too late. the seller threw out all the items not sold in the garage sale, including... Eek yes, the controller. 35 He's a "newbie" and did not know what the DCC stood for. He just wanted to start a HO scale layout for his son. The good news, we have a newcomer to the hobby! Thumbsup

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There's no reason the Atlas unit wouldn't work. It's more advanced than the Bachmann and does more 'real' DCC stuff, like you can use your own address - like the cab number of the loco, rather than program button 1 to be the cab forward, button 2 to be the GP-40, etc. ANy DCC system will work with any DCC decoder. And the cheapy decoders in those Bachmann locos are made by the same company that made the Atlasmaster DCC system - Lenz.

So...I can use the Atlas controller for Bachman DCC? I haven't seen the Atlas version. The lhs does not really supply much in the way of DCC yet so I'm not sure what I'm getting into. If there is someone out there can can take a few minutes and explain the pro's and cons about this, I would appreciate it fully.

My "stupid question(s)" is this: Do I need to modify Bachman DCC units in any way to run on the Atlas version? How does the Atlas DCC perform against the Bachman?

Thanks for the help guys!

Hi there,

YOu should not have to modify the Bachman loco to run with the Atlas unit. They both conform to standards set by the NMRA so they are interchangable.
The Atlas is of a better quality than the Bachman, and you can do more with it. As long as you set the controller to the DCC address of the loco you want to control, it should be fine. The default address out of the box is 3 for most DCC locos, but often it can be programmed to the same number as printed on the cab. IF all else fails, you may need to reset the Bachman loco, and it should work with address 3.

To get to grips with the basics of DCC, have a look here: http://www.tonystrains.com/tonystips/dc ... /index.htm
That should help to get some idea of what it is and what it can do.
