Transformer Woes
#16
I'm beginning to get confused by some of this! but, bottom-line, I need a better transformer to power both old & new locos, as well as the turnout switch.

I just thought I'd clarify that the Athearn transformer is working well now. I've always been able to get a fine range of speed with most of my locos, from a slow crawl to running fast. The only thing that is happening now is that the transformer has to now be cranked up higher. That is, to achieve a moderate speed, it now has to be cranked into the 70s (on the dial).

I took a risk last night and ran some of my old locos (my diecast British Hornby Dublo) that draw a lot of power and again, they ran fine with a good range of speed -- except that the transformer had to be run in the 70s or even 80s.

Meanwhile, I'll still hunt for a better transformer (i.e., MRC Tech 4 280 Dual DC Power Pack 16VA AB116) as suggested. I could do with another one and simply run the Athearn one until it dies.

Once you have a better pack for runnign the trains, use it only for that. Don't connect anythign to the accessory outputs. Use the accessory outputs of the other packs to light buildings and power switch machines.

Randy,

That sounds good & makes sense. I'll try to have 3 on the go.
