Gene,

Those sound great with a Tsunami and a good 1" speaker in the fuel tank. If you didn't know already, they come with the frame already milled to take a speaker, you just need to drill some holes in the fuel tank. I've found that depending on the speaker you may have to remove a little extra material, but it's not too bad a job. Just be sure that you don't short the speaker leads against the frame (ask me how I know!).

Squidbait...yeah I opened it up to see how it was set up...it'll be easy to install sound in....Bachmann did a great job from that aspect.

I'm not connected in anyway except by friendship with the owner, but the best sound I've heard installed in a locomotive is with Railmaster Speakers. www.railmasterhobboies.com

BTW, I have no problem at all with "train-set" quality locos. I have several of these -- a few are from the "Presidents Choice" Loblaws Christmas train sets (from the early-90s to about 2008, our Loblaws grocery chain used to put out an annual Christmas IHC trainset, which was excellent value). Their detail is usually good and their running quality excellent.

I even have a few budget-quality British locos (from Hornby's economically-priced "Hornby Railroad" range) that are excellent. Fairly good detail & excellent running.

It depends who's trainsets we are talking about. In the case of bachmann, they probably beat out Life Like and Model power sets. If they Spectrum sets, even better. However, when it comes to the basic bachmann trainset, i'm thinking Athearn and P1k Sets have them beat. Walthers used to have good sets as well, but I haven't seen them in a while.

All popular priced train set locos used to have the flat pancake style motor that was basically an on-off throttle control and very poor at pulling loads. The exception was the old Atlas sets, and I think Walthers who offered their train sets with can motors and gear towers with all wheel pick up and all wheel drive. About the time that Athearn got back into train set production, Bachmann came out with Bachmann Plus which was basically the old Bachmann train set bodies on a Bachmann Spectrum drive. Lifelike came out with Proto 1000 which is the old train set body on a Proto 2000 drive. Any locomotive with a pancake motor driving off one truck will run awful and not pull well at all. Those locomotives with the better drives just lack some of the body detailing that you would find on Athearn Genesis, Bachmann Spectrum, Lifelike P2k, etc. They will be good runners.

I don't know if Jim comes to this site. I remember a few years ago the club was set up a the Lakewood Mall. It was right after Athearn came out with their first Gp60 model, the one with the standard cabin blue & yellow warbonnet. This gal came by and asked if we had any Gp60's running, and just then one of the guys who modeled intermodal had his train come through with a pair of Gp60's on the point. She mentioned that she worked at Athearn (when they still built product here, before Horizon got involved). She said she was going to tell her husband about our display.

When her husband came by, it turned out he was one of the partners that bought the company from Irv's widow. I introduced Jim to him, and Jim was going to try to show him one of the many Athearn locomotives he had bought over the years. Jim wanted to show him a "stock" unit, but discovered that out of probably over 50 Athearn locomotives he had, not one was left stock! He had detailed or kitbashed every one!
