The Kings Port & Western recently aquired two SD9s, one from the Great Northern and another from the Bessimer. When they coincidentally arrived the same day management was struck by their similar paint schemes.
Usually KP&W locomtives have been painted orange and slate blue....but it was thought that an orange and black scheme would nicely compliment the orange and black box cars of the line (seen in the background).
Here is what the paint shop came up with...
Welllll, OK, the real story is that
I've been wanting to have a pair of KP&W locomotives pull a long string of open hoppers to represent coal trains that come to the Penn Central in the Hudson Valley via the KP&W and connections west (including bil's LS&W). I have two SD9s that do the job nicely that wear PC and Pennsy colors
A couple of weeks ago I found the two SD9 shells pictrured at the top of this post for less than $20 for the pair (handrails included and assembled!). Their similar orange and black schemes inspired me to create an orange and black KP&W scheme for them. Once they were painted and lettered with home made decals I simply switched out the shells. Now the KP&W runs coal trains as I've been imagining.

It's often a shame to repaint a unit for our private name road when the engine already has a great paint scheme. Good move, I love the scheme.

Very nice. Looks like you just had to mask off the orange you wanted to keep and paint the black, is that right? And remove some lettering. They look great! Funny too, I also was struck by how similar the schemes were, was Great Northern a partial owner of the Bessimer?

Right! I only needed to mask off the orange stripes I wanted to show and then painted the rest black. Removing lettering was achieved by light scraping of a mini screwdriver blade and a pencil eraser. I've been looking up photos of Great Northern locos and a lot of them seem to have a green tint to their black sections and a gold stripe trim. I don't know if the shell I purchased was painted by some one other than a manufacturer but it sure worked for me. I should have noted in my first post that it really was the ease with which I could make the locos match that motivated the new KP&W scehme. Laziness wins out again!

They look great Ralph. I like the new paint scheme even better than the old one. I wouldn't be concerned about running both paint schemes at the same time, many railroads had multiple paint jobs going at once.
I have A pic of there sister Cadillac SD-7's. They are a set of proto 2000's that I got undecorated and painted for the home road. They were once the big freighters on the road until the Train Masters came out. Now they run the secondary and local freights.
My other car is a locomotive, ARHS restoration crew

Ralph! Nice creativity in reusing and merging both paint scheme! I like it!
Often, on real railroads, getting a new different model on the road is a good excuse to have a slightly different paint scheme.

That's a good question. I'm not really sure...so I guess by definition that means its exeprimental! I'm not planning on repianting any of the blue and orange locos, and I don't know how many more locos I might aquire for the KP&W....time will tell, I guess!

If you really wanted to be lazy, I'd just go with some Black paint over the logos, and a "KPW" reporting mark. Considering you model a railroad that appears to be dependant on the cash-strapped Penn Central for traffic, I'm surprised the KP&W is doing well enough to paint all of it's equipment!
It appears other railroads in the northeast weren't so lucky!
Incidentally, Penn Central-component New Haven was known to have different paint schemes on different locomotives. FL9s, EP5s, and some other electrics got the "McGinnis" scheme. New Haven's E33s (EF4s) recieved a unique scheme, and their U25Bs also appeared to have a scheme different from the normal black and orange on New Haven freight diesels.

New Haven E33 paint scheme was bold and distinctive. Still one of my favorite "modern" scheme on an electric locomotive.
I suspect KP&W's success is what makes other roads suffer! ;-)
