"Patching" Locomotive Models

gbwdude Wrote:Hello gents,

By chance do you know when railroads started patching locomotives and cars instead of giving them full repaints? I model the late 30's to early 40's and except for the occasional shortline or industry I have seen that from that era. Just curious, because I'm planning to give one or two of my cars some history.

I'm not sure when. I think legally, if you owned the car, you had to have it repainted for your railroad's "reporting marks" within a reasonable date. I suppose its technically possible you could patch a unit, but on the other hand, public image was more important to railroads of that time, so it might be a little odd.

The more "blatant" patching was a more common practice during the 60s and 70s when there was no money to be had and railroads didn't care what they looked like.

I did it for mine just like a real branch line...I masked off then sprayed over the original road (Amtrak), then "stenciled" on the new name with dry transfer lettering...
