At the moment, what we want to do is resolve this in two ways. One is to pair participants alphabetically and then leave it up to Al and Bob (hypothetical examples only) to work out what they exchange, how, and why. If Al wants to send Bob a tank car but Bob doesn't have an industry, then Bob can propose a boxcar instead, and if that's OK with Al, they go ahead with it. Or Al says gee, Bob, all I have is tank cars, can't send you anything else, my layout is a model of the Standard Oil refinery, I just have a 44 ton that switches tank cars -- in that case, Bob might accept a tank car as overhead traffic. Or they might work out something entirely different.

The object we have in mind for now is to make fellowship primary. This would tend to exclude a clique that only exchanges cars among its own members, for instance -- there's plenty of that around, and I want to avoid it. So the alternative is to be less formal and more inclined to go for whatever works.

I think it would be most fun to take pics of our shared cars in action at industries but they could also be featured at a crossing as part of a through-freight if we don't have appropriate jobs for another members rolling stock.

Switching, and trans loading / cargo transfer... tank cars ( paint, oil, solvents, boiler feed water ), 20' containers filled with scrap iron for the foundry, moved to 3' gauge, "container cars", Boxcar loads of " Parts "..... Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Icon_twisted

Seriously, I have a train show set-up, Sep. 12, and show, 13,14,15, and then a lot of additional module work for Trainfest.
Still, the thought of having a small switching layout, in the form of that interchange --------- First challenge, where the ( sound of ship's whistle covering the enunciation of expletives not deleted ) do I have, or can I make, space for it, once it is designed ! Icon_lol

why do you need an exchange yard? Unless you mean between standard and narrow gauge

My modules are designed to fit with other modules, the old set had a narrow gauge ( partialy dual gauged ) loop at an upper level above the "main line" ( two straight lines from one end to the other ) tracks.
My new modules have a dual gauge loop, below the level of the "main Line".
The three On30 ( intended, and occupying 24" X 12' ) modules will be a simple switchback, to get lumber loads up to the "high-line transfer", to load a lumber schooner, anchored below. ( water depth, and rocky shore line/bottom, prevent pier side mooring, Schooners have to anchor in deeper water. )

So ! I do not have a "switching layout". :oops: Nope

A Standard Gauge, Narrow Gauge, interchange, and switching scenario is really needed, for:

1- SM&CH switching
2- SHS&D switching
3- A depiction of the interchange point where the two actually meet.
4- Another project :o really? Wink Smile yes. Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

5- A start / finish point for any "Exchange cars", with a reason for their arrival, and departure.
( I haven't chosen a "geological" location for that facility, but am leaning towards a spot, in the low hills,
just North of the Bridgehampton Road Race Circuit, South Fork of Eastern Long Island, N.Y.
)
6- Finally, a neat way to connect with the NY&A themed layout that Rscott417 is posting about. Yeah we're operating

.......the Shipyard owner ( and therefore, the SM&CH owner ) is a steam 'enthusiast' / translate as
"freak" 357 357 357 because only a "Steam Freak" would commission the building of a 3' gauge outside frame,

The next step will be to provide the final membership list and define the first exchange. The central point for all events and updates in the program will be this blog. For now we should just work out a one to one exchange (a baby steps approach) to work out the logistics like postage and shipping. We have one layout in Canada, so it would be unfair to one or two members of the car exchange to be stuck with the heavy postage. We don't necessarily have to ship ONLY one car (a pair of coal hoppers with pea and stove coal, for example). Once we get into a rhythm, we can try commodity based interchanges. I have modern and steam era cars as well as a Varney Little Joe, so I can interchange either. If you don't have cars for other eras, it doesn't hurt to buy a car or two for other eras.
