CNR Kensington sub

Unfortunately, I must side with Wayne on that one. I went the Shapeway road and learned myself if you want a good model, you got to tkae the best stuff available which cost an arm and a leg. Also, many intricate details do not survive well the printing process. In the end, scratchbuilding or partially 3Dprinting complicated part may be a safe way. I'll give only one advice: rivets often are a mess. I'd be more inclined to sand smooth the model and add them later with Archer rivets decal sheet.

Scratch building is far easier that many like to think. In fact, it is often faster to scratchbuild than kitbash models. I'm pretty sure the gondola could be done starting with a suitable commercial model. But I understand your fear.

I think your revised track plan is a good start. You were right, the oil dealer fare better in the background than the foreground.

I always loved team track near small yards. It's always full of junk, ties, plates, barrels, etc.

I hear you. I'll really need to step up my building game to accomplish some of the things I want.

Glad you like the new plan. I feel it gives me a good operating layout with decent staging and storage and if I was to take off the door at the far end of the east staging I could possibly do a lift out section to join the layout in front of the ready mix plant.

It's funny you mentioned the junk. I was thinking of where to put the dumpster for the TT area when I remembered the era. There should be a decent amount of old pallets and bracing laying around. I'd like to have a small crane but I can't find any information if there was one. Might have to fudge that one.

I'm sure you'll find a lot of thing to do before getting bored and wanting to add the lift out section. It's impressive how little trackage is required to keep someone captivated. With your number of industries, you can run many different trains at each session.

I remember a loading dock at La Pocatière that existed during until the late 90s. The ramp was made of old ties covered with asphalt. There was a tank car cut in hald serving as a diesel reservoir and a few MoW cars. I should try to find my old pictures and post them. Since it was in Eastern Quebec, it had that Maritime vibe and small time railroading feeling (even if located on CNR transcontinental mainline). It was ver similar in aspect to your prototype pictures with high grass and open space.

Stephen, I hope it can help a little bit. I found my old pictures taken in 1998 at La Pocatière QC (my first railfan experience when I was a teenager).

Thanks for the pics Matt. They will help when it comes time to detail that section of the layout.

I was able to finally get the rest of the freight cars and track off of my bench work this afternoon and was ready to lay track.

I had planned to reuse my Peco switches and new Micro Engineering code 70 rail when I came to the realization that I had code 100 switches and the rail looks huge beside the code 70 track. So, after a few minutes of pricing new switches with tax came to almost $400 Eek I decided to stick with the present switches and reuse my code 100 rail again. Not my first choice but one I can afford since I already have everything on hand.

Thanks. I did manage to get the cork down on the "main" and loosely placed some track and switches down and found my first possible problem with the plan. I haven't had time all week to take another crack at it but I'll get some pictures next time I am in the layout room.

I haven't touched a thing since my last update. Way too busy with work and it has been nice outside so that's where I have been spending my time.

Work has been at a standstill on the Kensington sub. I found out that I have a crack in my foundation and I had some water come into our basement. Nothing too serious but I may have to pull the modules out of the room to have new flooring installed. Very disappointing but one of those things I don't have control over.

Thanks MLW. The contractor never came so my issue is still unresolved. I may lay the track anyway and operate to work out the kinks and worse case I may have to pull it out in the spring.
