I'm not sure what the issue is. The Number Of Unread Posts (x) link appears for me on both themes. By recreating the light theme, it shouldn't have effected that link. Only thing I can suggest is (if you haven't already done this) is select the dark theme and reelect the light theme. Maybe it just needs a kick in the head with a ball-peen hammer.
