I want to create the classic NYC/ PC safety stripes on my RDC. I know decals have been commercially available in the past but I'm having trouble finding them now. I'm gonna use a combination of paint and decal stripes...I think!

BTW, it's what they call a bold striping scheme! Never seen it before, but that's a nice little thing to make on your model.

Thanks Matt! Yep, that distinctive tiger striping says "New York Central" and its subsequent merger road Penn Central. It will really make it clear whose unit it is. But, its a complicated scheme.

You're right. It seems really simplistic, but it isn't at all. If the black stripes were white and the white were black, everything would have been a lot simpler with stock decal striping.

Ralph, that would probably be easier to do in-paint than with decal stripes. Paint the front end white, then lay out some masking tape, face-down, on a sheet of glass. Use a new blade to remove both factory-edges from the tape, then cut strips of tape to the required widths. The red and white stripes look like they're the same width, while the black ones are narrower.. Use these strips to mask-over the areas to be red (lay out these stripes extremely carefully, as they'll be used as a reference point for all of the subsequent stripes). Once the areas to be painted red are covered with strips of tape, use wider pieces of tape to cover all of the exposed white areas, then remove the strips from atop the area to be painted red and apply the red paint. As soon as the paint is dry to the touch, remove all tape and set the model aside until the paint is fully cured - at least 24 hours.
Next, apply tape over the red stripes, then for all of the black and white stripes, too. Mark or otherwise denote which colour each strip represents. Once the entire front end is covered with tape, remove all of the strips which represent black stripes, spray the black paint, then remove all tape and set aside to cure. Use a small brush, with the appropriate colour, to touch up any areas needing attention.

I thought that the CPR did a pretty-decent job with "bold" on their RDCs, too.
