...or anyone else that likes to build steam-era freight car models.

Look at the variety here!
There's lots of modeling information in that photo-including 2 laborers unloading a car.
Yeah, this exact photo was posted in my Potomac Line thread, I was talking about manually assisting the loads out of open hoppers. Shorpy has such a wonderful selection of super high resolution images, they are great for 1950's rolling stock. Several nice shots of C&NW yards. In some images you can see guys riding the roofs and such.
Great example of car loads too!

Thanks!

Matt
I see a huge variety of tank cars, a couple of flat cars with pipes, and some gons with some interesting panel-looking things.

I suspect the workers are unloading sand. They appear to be drop-bottom gons, and it looks like they are simply shoveling the sand that remained after the doors were opened. I am assuming this is sand for locomotive traction.

Yeah! How about that excavator!

If it ok, here are some more Shorpy links that may be useful. Proviso, Washington D.C., Chicago, and others.

Gorgeous photo!
No more excuse to botch steam era freight car weathering!

Matt
Those photos are a great resource for modellers and an indication of what might have been seen in a passing train at one time. I remember how interesting it was to be stuck at a crossing while a train passed. Thumbsup
