Modeling Cliches to Avoid when Building your Layout
Posted by: Mileswestern - 04-16-2009, 02:24 PM - Forum: Upper Berth - Replies (58)

I'm currently writing an ongoing series of modeling cliches. I define "modeling cliches" as a visual or design layout element that most people see and notice that something is amiss, but they can't exactly put their finger on it. This is an ongoing series, so I'll add to this post as time goes on.

Let me know what you think. I think this should be discussed in the modeling community.

  Track CAd For The Challenged

If you like to use your track CAD to "doodle, and/or are somewhat "challenged" in the use of these programs, I found this software:

  Layout Pictures
Posted by: foulrift - 04-15-2009, 05:49 PM - Forum: HO Modeling - Replies (29)

Hey guys-here are some shots of my layout. The first one shows most of the freight handling area. The bulkhead flatcar was done while taking a layout break.

The next shot is of the coal dealer. At first it had a coal tower for storage but wasn't happy with it. I re-did it using Walthers Bulk Transfer area as a guide. I added heavy timber walls with coal bunkers.A front-end loader moves the coal around and loads trucks. Conveyors unload the coal.

The last shows the overpass which I use as a view block to separate the yard/switchback tracks from the rest of the layout/The bottom track leads to a wood chip collector, while the bottom road leads to the main building.

While the ballast is done and ground cover in place there is still lots to do.More ground cover, details, vehicles, etc.
Enjoy-Bob

  My coffee table video
Posted by: TrainNut - 04-15-2009, 05:33 PM - Forum: N/Z and Smaller Modeling - Replies (10)

This is a coffee table layout I built several years ago. We still have it and it still looks the same as it did the day I finished it. I don't remember if I ever showed this on the "other" site. I had forgotten about it until I was doing a similar YouTube search just now and it popped up. So, just for kicks, for those that remember it, here it is again...

The music was some generic clip I selected off of their site to fit the length of my video. The glass has been removed to reduce reflections in the video.

MRC Prodigy Advance 2 Power Supply
Posted by: gcrawford - 04-15-2009, 02:46 PM - Forum: DCC - Replies (3)

I've ordered the MRC Prodigy Advance Squared and notice on Tony's here there is a notice about the power supply being de-rated to 2.5 amps and recommending the use of an MF615 power supply to get the full 3.5 amps of power that MRC claims the unit will support. The MRC site states that the power supply that comes with the unit is a 15 Volt DC rated at 3.5 amps. This site states that the Magna Force 615 is a 15 volt AC unit rated at 5 amps.

My question is this: If I connect the Magna Force to my MRC system, will it cause a problem since I've gone from DC to AC?

Thanks in advance,

-g

  Walthers Cornerstone Module System
Posted by: Trucklover - 04-15-2009, 11:10 AM - Forum: Lower Berth - Replies (14)

Hi guys, i just wanted to let you guys know if anyone is interested that Walthers is haveing a HUGE sale on there Cornerstone Module System kits. Normal retail is $9.98 per kit, SALE for $2.98!!

I kinda went crazy and bought a ton of them LOL, but i only spent $77.48 (plus $8.98 shipping of coarse lol)

Here is what i got:

933-3720 ~~ Peaked Roof and Base ~~ 3 kits
933-3721 ~~ Flat Roof and Base ~~ 3 kits
933-3723 ~~ Large Walls and Windows ~~ 3 kits
933-3724 ~~ Foundations and Loading Docks ~~ 4 kits
933-3725 ~~ Wall Columns and Caps ~~ 4 kits
933-3727 ~~ Large Door Wall Sections ~~ 3 kits
933-3730 ~~ Walls w/Vehicle Doors ~~ 3 kits
933-3735 ~~ Walls w/Single Windows (Metal Sash) ~~ 3 kits

25 kits in total LOL. I plan to build these and make some custom buildings out of them, large, medium and small in size, and then sell them to make a little money that i desperately need (out of a job for almost a year now Wallbang ) The hard part was finding enough money to pay for them lol

Just wanted to let anyone know who is interested that these are on sale and now is the time to pick them up if you want some cheap buildings lol

Walthers Cornerstone Cragill Grain and Buds Trucking FS
Posted by: Trucklover - 04-15-2009, 10:23 AM - Forum: Swap Meet - Replies (2)

Hi guys, i have listed the following for sale on ebay if anyone is interested:

  • 1. Walthers Cornerstone Series Cargill Grain Elevators. This was built from 2 ADM Grain Elevator Kits, instead of using ADM like everyone else, i decided to do this one for the Cargill Grain. This structure features a extra long silo structure, 16 silos instead of the normal 8 included in the kit. Building dimensions are as follows: 22-1/2" long x 10" wide x 14-1/2" tall. This is a nice structure and it would make a great spot to load some grain trains and also to load some grain trucks with. Has loading sheds on both sides of the main structure, the large shed being for the grain cars, and the small being for grain trucks.

The main structure was painted white with gray doors and rooftop machinery. The silos have been also been sprayed white and the conveyor housing is gray. Decals have been sprayed with dullcoat. The large Grain Car shed is removable and not permanently attached to the main structure. This was done to make shipping easier and safer. When you receive the grain elevator, you may choose to permanently attach the shed if you wish, but you do not have to if you do not want to.....

    2. Walthers Cornerstone Series Bud's Trucking Company Building. This building is fully assembled and painted. This one features 2 rail docks on the left side and 1 truck dock on the right side. Can easily be kitbashed with the other one i have to make a longer backround structure.....

Andrew has asked me to pass this on to all the forums that I'm on. For those of
you who used this in the past, it suddenly vanished from the Fotopic site and,
despite multiple attempts to contact them over an extended period, he has been
unable to get any sensible reply. He has started to rebuild it at a new address
- some designs are on line, more - including new ones - will be added over the
next few days. This is the new address
