There are two Prototype Railway Magazines that are available on-line

If you are interested in Modern Railroading in the real world, have a look.

International Railway Journal

You can read the current issue here: International Railway Journal - January 2009

Railway Age

You can read the current issue here: Railway Age - December 2008

If you use your browser to subscribe to the RSS feed, you can read all the issues back to 2006!

what is the most popular type of locomotive on your layout
Posted by: stuart_canada - 01-15-2009, 04:27 PM - Forum: HO Modeling - Replies (24)

i was curious what the most popular type of locomotiveon your layout is.
if i break it down by type of locomotive on my layout it would break down as the following
EMD models
SW 1200
6 models varous roadnames
GP 7/ 9 I never can tell them apart
6 models mostly CNR
GP 30, 40 and 40-2W
9 models various roadnames
SD 40-2
9 models various roadnames, but mostly CN and CP
SD 70Mac
1 unit
DD 40
1 unit
MP 15DC
1 unit
F unit
1 unit. CNR

GE models
Dash 8-40CW
3 models all LMS
Dash 9-44
1 unit BCR

Alco
RS 3
2 units both CN

i find it strange that I have so many EMD units since I perfer GEmodels , other than switchers. since I have a switching layout the big work horses do not get out much
what is your break down by Locomotive makers?

  Passenger car interchange??
Posted by: iis612 - 01-15-2009, 12:08 PM - Forum: Upper Berth - Replies (11)

I know that to some extent Pullman cars where interchanged between railroads. I am wondering if, and to what extent railroads interchanged their home road passenger cars??

I know that the PRR, NYC and Wabash (to a lesser extent) all shared Detroit Unioin Terminal with the PM.
I am wondering if it would be prototypical to have passenger equipment, outside of the typical head end cars, from a different road?
I have come across some information about this practice, but only as it pertained to head end cars and Pullman. Not that it would directly effect my passenger operations, as I do not plan on doing extensive passenger switching. I know I will have through traffic featuring PRR and NYC as well as my home road, but they might have to stop and pick up a sleeper, or swap out dining cars.
It is not an important issue to me, my curiousity stems more from a rail fan perspective.

  steam hunt
Posted by: Wiredup - 01-14-2009, 11:36 PM - Forum: N/Z and Smaller Modeling - No Replies

I'm looking for a Northern in N scale... how are the new Bachmann ones? I've realized I got a lot of great steam on my layout...but CN used a lot of Northerns in their roster and I could probably use one or two on my layout...

Other than the Bachmann Northern does anyone else currently produce one that will operate on 11 radius turns with ease? I've heard the Con-Cor one likes to skip around on them tight turns a bit more than usual... that and with their last two locos I've bought and had issues with, I'm having issues trusting them....

Man i hate it when this happens Wallbang Wallbang

Okay, if you love steel mills, this guys work is a MUST see, even if you are not a steel mill modeler, this is a MUST see!! Your jaw will hit the floor, i guarantee it Eek

http://www.zahkunst.net/mainpage.htm

This guy does the most amazing, incredible, beautiful, and amazing work i have ever seen in my entire life! His stuff had to cost thousands and thousands of dollars to build. The site is a little hard to navigate, but once you get the hang of it and figure it out, you will see more and more of his work as he explains what he uses to make the buildings. To give you a idea of how much stuff he has, he has 10 yes count them 10 BLAST FURNACES on Blast Furnace Row Eek Eek Eek

In the link above, You are on the main page of the site i think, or the home page. At the very top, click the link that says "1:160 model". After looking at the preview pics and the trackplan on that page, click the tab titled "Blast Furnace Blog Page" at the top in the scroll menu. To go to the next page, click the Blast Furnace Row + Support tab to see the rest of his work,. After your done with that page click the one next to it called Power Generation + Support and so on.....

This guy does fantastic work!! All is N scale but he uses HO and N buildings.

Check it out if you have not seen it already, its truly amazing work he does Eek

Thanks to this guy, i want to re-design my steel mill plan for my future modeling in the steel industry Wallbang

  Old Structures
Posted by: Charlie B - 01-14-2009, 09:23 PM - Forum: Upper Berth - Replies (96)

Hello everyone.
Over the years I have taken a few pictures of some very nifty buildings I was hoping I could someday model.
Well, I'm not getting any younger and since there are some fabulous modelers on this forum, I thought maybe a thread of structure photos would be an inspiration to others.
I did not take measurements on any of the buildings I photographed, but that just gives everyone a licence to build a size they need. I am going to post 2 pictures of an old gas station. ( For some reason you have to click on the picture to see the whole photograph) Nope It was about gone when I took the pictures, but if my memory serves me right it was a Quaker State station. It was located between Calcutta and Fredricktown Ohio on Rte. 170, and I remember my dad buying gas there a time or two.
I don't have a whole lot of these structure pictures but there are some neat buildings that would look nice on a layout.
If you have some to share please do, and let me know if you want more of these structure pictures.
Charlie

  "Lack Of Progress" Report
Posted by: MountainMan - 01-14-2009, 02:43 PM - Forum: N/Z and Smaller Modeling - Replies (2)

Today was the day I hoped to unveil the first castings for my cut stone buildings. However, despite the assurances of the LHS guy and Woodland Scenics, and despite following their instructions with the precision of a proctologist at a midgets' convention, the molds failed to separate properly and the entire operation went downhill from there faster than a jack rabbit on Viagra.

I...am........disappointed. Wallbang

Sigh...so little time, so many things to screw up.
