I installed sound in a "one motor" 44ton switcher some years go. The ESU Loksound micro and the smallest of their speakers fit under the hood just fine. One side the decoder and the speaker over a truck under the other hood.
The Bachmann PCB was replaced by a smaller one just to hold the cable connections. The decoder had no socket. All wires hard soldered to the PCB.
