"Joe's Model Trains" , paint and decal remover. So far I have not had any problems with this product. I have used it to remove the lettering from several old Athearn cars, with no major damage to the paint surface under the letters.
Like all things, there is a "learning curve"......I would recommend using it on a car that you intend to repaint before re-lettering, just to learn how best to use it.
