The dock lock prevents the trailer from moving away from the loading dock wall. As the hilo moves into the trailer, travel would be pushing the trailer away from the dock. Along with this would be trailer chocks that set ahead of the first set of trailer tires.

Along with dock locks, you will also find adjustable jacks that that are placed ahead of the crank down trailer wheels just behind the trailer pin. These are only used when the trailer is setting without the tractor attached. They are there as a safety precaution in the event the crank down wheels collapse.
