How do you do this kind of "pavement" in 1:87 scale? The paved street in the background is "as usual" but the foreground is found very often at the prototype but not on models. I tried to do it with fine ballast but that looked like a beach and is not correct at all (ref. remark of Catweasel).
I think the prototype is compacted crushed stones and over time got some small stones loose and lay on top now.
