What's the material you're using for the layout top in your second photo? It reminds me of a building product which used to be quite common around here as a sheathing material on wood-framed buildings. I believe that it was called Donnacona Board. Apparently, it's still around and is used primarily as a soundproofing agent...probably a good use under track.
