Yeah, Glen, I used to install cedar shakes as a volunteer for the Millbrook Village Historical Association. Did 3 barns and a cooper's shop. The typical way to finish a shake roof is to cut the edges clean on one side and have the other side's shakes extend above the crest and over the first side's shingles. You then run a line across at about 2 inches of exposure above the peak and cut off each shake. It'd be tough to make that work with yours, and the basswood's gonna look a whole lot better.
