I had this happen a while ago.
the track had a bad spot in it. (the road bed wasn't holding the track level when weight was on it.
Let the train run to the area until it stalls
Gently push down on the roof of the loco above the wheels. One finger just to see if all the truck's wheels are touching the rails.
Mine turned out to be that one side of the trucks would raise up and cut off power to the engine.
