Russ hope this helps: The SD40E's are rebuilds from SD50 donors....NS is rebuilding their SD50's, rerating them down to 3,000 HP, adding air conditioning, among other mechanical/electrical upgrades and renumbering them into the 6300 series .

So the SD40E's were originally SD50's, so are a larger/longer locomotive than a normal SD40/40-2.....the lack of rear 'porches' as well as the lack of dynamic brake blisters are a quick spotting feature difference from the SD40-2 helpers...

The SD40-2's days as Altoona-Johnstown Pa helpers are numbered.

Another interesting note is that the SD40E's assigned to helper service have been fitted with helperlink so as to allow capability for helpers to cut off on the fly....as Conrail was doing shortly before the NS takeover.
