I remember the town I grew up in would have gondolas brought in with gravel, cinders, or sand. A truck mounted crane would come by and unload the cars with a clamshell bucket. Some times the operator would be in a hurry, (or maybe some of them weren't all that good,) but they would sure bang up the ends and sides of some of those gons!!
I only know what I know, and I don't understand very much of it, either.
