I never could understand the model change when they chopped the hood and changed the air filter style. Conrail called them 8's and 10's, but I don't know if there was any difference under the hood as far as horsepower/performance goes.
Our 7 had a chopped nose, so I suppose we could have called it A GP6 7/8
