If I recall correctly, I used one of the tips on the divider which I use for transferring measurements. I keep meaning to build a rivet machine from an old sewing machine that I've saved for that purpose, but most of the riveting jobs have been so small that it hasn't really been worth the trouble. A lot depends on the surface on which you work, too. Try glass, wood, balsa wood, cardstock, or varying layers of paper, and perhaps a cutting mat, too.
Update: A probably better choice nowadays is the three-dimensional rivet decals offered by Archer and MicroMark.
