David Barrow. Yes - he was one of the people who popularized building layouts in "dominos" (modules).

For another cool application of this principle, have a look at Model Railroad Planning 1999, page 66. "Big Industries in Small Spaces: Industrial Dominoes" by Linda Sand. She draws up track plans for 6-7 different industries which each has 3-5 tracks and quite a few car spots for different types of cars, and will fit into the typical corner spot on a layout.
