I don't see a yard on your layout, but in my opinion yards are often not as important for a model railroad as modelers think. One foot wide by 6 feet long won't be nearly enough space for a yard, but could include a nice industry. Also do you have an interchange track on your layout? You could change out rolling stock on an interchange track between operating sessions so that you aren't constantly shifting the same cars around. Do you have an industry in mind that you would like to model?
