Gary, this tread is for models too. I also realize that today the cost of film for the cameras prohibits just shooting pictures of any old or new rail car, but keep in mind that today's valuable antiques are the cast aways from yesteryear, the keepsakes survive too often to obtain market value.
I took lots of random shots of rail cars that are now real treasures for me, and film with processing was about $10 a roll.
Here is one of Amtrak #41 at Smith crossover (Manual block station) waiting for clearance for a reverse move around 8AM December, 1977, one of the coldest winters we ever had. The train at this point is only 7 hours behind time.
