IIRC, the original time engine used plutonium fuel and needed a massive electrical charge of 1.2 Jigawatts, hence the "capacitor" element. After Brown's trip to the future, his capacitor ran on ordinary kitchen garbage and no longer required a massive electrical buildup; however, a ground speed of 88 mph was apparently still mandatory.

I think that the capacitor was still electrical, but the electricity was provided by "Mr Fusion" home reactor that could be fuelled by garbage and kitchen scraps. Wink Big Grin
