What does the "banking" of the fire involve?

There are several ways but,I will use what I was told by my grandfathers..
Basically that's where the coal is piled up against the sides of the firebox and away from the center of the firebox or you could bank it under the firebox door then the top of the coal pile was wet down so it would burn slower.
