In my challenge thread, I gave indication about a RMC article (1976, May I think). There's a picture of an old Maine Central steel boxcar converted to wood chip service. I'll check it for you when I return home this afternoon.
It is clear CN and CP used 40' 3-Bay steel hoppers (without modifications) and roofless boxcar. CN Nutbar took a picture of a roster of them.
