I love the CNR steamers. I really like Ian's books except for the fact that they are so gloomy... 
While there is always a great description of what is going on on his chosen day (June, 1954), he always adds the little knife-twist: "...and three years from now, #1234 will be towed unceremoniously to a date with the cutter's torch."
