As a former brakeman I'm not to sure I would want to use ear plugs around moving railroad equipment.
UP's rule is you don't have to wear the hearing protection if you are over 300' away from the engine. I know when I was on the ground working the field I didn't wear them. I did have to remember to put them back in when I climbed up on the engine. Also if you don't jam them in and just put them in so they bearly stay in they don't block much noise out and you comply with the rule. I wish we had them when I was riding the old WP GP's, with no insulation between the cab and engine compartment.
