I always understood it to have survived until the mid-60s...but I don't have the first hand experience that some of you had with the time period.
When you watch Bond films, pay attention to the opening scene where you are looking down the barrel of a gun at Bond and then he turns and shoots you. In the early films, he is always wearing a hat...but never in the later films.
