As far as the GPS in the phones, supposedly when you dial 911 the GPS automatically turns on, even if you have it turned off..... and yes, it's so the rescuers can find you.
I leave it on when I'm hiking, just in case. That way God forbid if I ever have to make that call, when I say "I'm in Grist Mill Park", I don't hear: "Where??? Grist Mill Park has 5 miles of trails"!!!
