It may help to join or just visit one of those rail photo sites as some photographers not only record locos but freight cars as well, so you can sort of follow some freight cars during their career.
Railroad Pictures Archive is one such resource site and I found their search engine to be very capable.
You do however have to take the listed date with a grain of salt, but many contributors will specify if the date is correct or approximate.
As with any of this, its your RR so you can do what you darn well like as long as it makes you happy.
