I was working to finish the Fowler boxcar today, and was excited to discover a method which prevents further damage to the older Westerfield cars with which I've been having difficulties.
It seems that the first step is to create some small details which need to be added to the car. Then, the parts, to be added, in turn, are dropped onto the floor of the workshop. As long as the car remains on my workbench, and I remain on my hands and knees on the shop floor, looking for the errant parts, no damage will befall the poor cars.

With my knees now somewhat the worse for wear, the car is ready for paint:
