Valentines day has no tradition in many European countries. It is pushed over the last years for pure marketing reasons. Especially sales of flowers is pushed.
There is a nice story about a young Canadian lady that went to France, felt in love, stayed in France and married a french man.
Year over year did he ignore valentines day. After some years did she complain and told him about her expectations and the tradition way back home. She had also a problem with the lack of fast food. Fast food is not very much accepted in France (but there are plenty of fast food restaurants) and he never went with her to a fast food restaurant.
His valentine gift to her : "An annual invitation to Pizza Hut". Two problems solved!
